Concept Board

To begin this semester off in Advanced Apparel we had to create a concept board. A concept board is a collection of ideas from different sources that inspire you. I learned that an acceptable concept board has 3 dimensional ideas placed on it such as fabrics, beads, flowers,, or anything else that you have been inspired by. For my line of clothing this semester, I have decided to design a line of dressy athletic wear...kinda odd i know, but it works. I was inspired by my own life. I work out, or am on the go all the time and wanted to design clothes that could suit someones busy lifestyle. I wanted the garments not only to be comfy, but also chic at the same time. The color pallet I chose is royal purple, coral, dark grey, and black. The garments are going to be lined to give the fabric more body. However, they will still have enough drape to give a more relaxed look. I am definitely hoping they turn out the way I want them to! Keep your fingers crossed! :)

New Semester, New Projects

HELLO 2011. This semester I am taking a bunch of awesome classes: Advanced Apparel, Fashion Practicum, History of Fashion, and a Media software class, just to name a few. In Advanced Apparel I will be designing a line of clothing and constructing the garments. For two of the pieces I will use patterns and alter them some, and the 3rd piece I will use a software on the computer to generate a pattern that I create. I have already begun making my design concept board, which will hopefully turn out to be pretty cool:) I'm not going to say what I'm making yet, but once I put a picture of my concept board up, you will know. In Fashion Practicum we will be learning how to open and run our own business. It's more of a participation class. We will come up with what we want to carry in our stores, learn how to fund our business, plan the opening assortment, develop a marketing plan, and create a visual merchandising plan. The best part about this class is that at the end of March, our class will fly to the Atlanta Apparel Market where we will get to spend time talking to different vendors and work on our "business" at the same time. We also get to shop at the different booths at wholesale prices!!! Definitely something I want to do:) History of Fashion basically explains itself. I will learn about the changing of fashion from way back to when to the present. Although this class will involve a bunch of history and memorizing, hopefully it won't be too bad. Anyways, that's a summary of what my semester is going to look like this spring. Once I get started on my projects, I will post pictures!

Clothing Construction Sample Notebook. Finished.

Today was the LAST lab day for my clothing class this semester. I am completely finished with ALL of my projects in that class, praise the Lord! My blouse turned out pretty good, although it was a little big. Maybe if i throw on a cute belt with it, it'll be alright:) I also completed my sample notebook today. I don't know exactly how many samples of different hems, buttons, button holes, hook & eye closures, zippers, and stitches we had to do, but it seemed like a lot! I doubt that I'll remember how to do all of them again, but at least I'll have it for future reference if I ever need it. I would put pictures of it up to show you what a sample notebook looks like, but it is rather boring. Anyways, this will be my last post about my sewing projects this semester, but I start Advanced Apparel in the Spring, so there will be many more to come next year! :)

This Semester is Coming to an End!

Wow. The semester is almost over! I am currently working on my shirt, which is taking me forever to finish. I have been working on it for about ummm 5 LAB PERIODS which is 15 HOURS!! I am making it out of a taupe-ish polyester fabric. It has a Mandarin collar, with 3/4 length sleeves. It also has 6 black and gold colored buttons down the front. I would like to mention that i used a machine to make my button holes...That was pretty fascinating. I only had a couple of puckers this time which isn't too bad considering the fact that I had to sew "set-in sleeves". But I fixed them so it looks better now:)
Not only am I working on finishing my shirt, I am also trying to get my sample notebook finished. I only have one more lab period to work on everything before the semester ends, but hopefully I'll get it all finished. Our sewing room is literally like the Project Runway room right before their time is out to quit working. Everyone is trying to work as quickly as possible. Fabric and threads are everywhere! (i feel so sorry for the cleaning lady). All of the tables are covered in fabric swatches, notions, scissors, folders, pin cushions, and everything else possible. I think the only thing that is keeping us all sane right now is the lovely music that we play in the background. But seriously.

My #2 Sewing Project

YAAAY for finishing my first piece of clothing!!! (had to get that outta my system) I made a simple skirt in my clothing class for my second project. I thought it turned out fairly good myself. I did NOT break any needles this time so that was definitely a step up from last time. I made it out of wool. Yes wool. Just because something is made out of wool does not mean that it's going to look like a fluffy sheep. When I told my sister what it was made out of, she just kinda gave me "that look" and i knew exactly what she was thinking, so I had to clear things up. Anyways, this simple A-line skirt took me about 6 hours to make. I got to use the serger to hem the edges which was niiiice because it didn't take near as long as hemming them with a machine. I blind stitched the waist by hand so that took some time to do. I also put a zipper and a closure on the back. WOOP WOOP! I am really steppin up in this sewing business, lemme tell ya haha.

On Tuesday we start makin our blouses. I am looking forward to that because I bought some pretty awesome fabric and some way cute buttons :)

"It's Such A Sensible Tote"

After 9 hours of class time, a few broken needles, and an embroidery machine that almost ran out of red thread....I'd say I got lucky :)

I'm Sewing!!

I am taking a class this year called Clothing Concepts in which I am learning how to sew! I probably should have acquired this skill a long time ago, but I was to stubborn to learn I guess haha. But I am having sooo much fun learning how to use a machine. I recently just finished making a tote bag. It has a cream and black swirl motif, with a pocket on the front. I embroidered my last name on the pocket in bright red which made it look awesome! I made it out of a very thick fabric so my machine had a hard time. Pretty sure I broke a total of 5 needles haha. I will put pictures up as soon as I can so you can see the finished product! :)

A little kick-off to my new blogging bloggness

I have recently decided not to post about my every day life (as in the past), but rather about my progress in becoming a fashion merchandiser, and tips and tricks that I have learned in or outside of class. Also, I am open to any ideas that you may have! You can find me on facebook and shoot me a message, or even follow me on twitter. I will try to keep up to date with this as much as I can, but by looking at my past blogs, I rarely posted haha. Hopefully that will change since I will be posting more on what I love! :)

School's Out For The Summer! =)

Okay, so first of all my freshman year blew by like crazy! It was here one minute and gone the next...literally. I would write about my second semster, because obviously I haven't been on here in forever, but that would take entirely too long. So I will do my best to summarize what has happened recently.
This past weekend my best friend Amy and I went to Abilene to watch the Lonestar Conference baseball tourney! We had a blast! However, I do think that I have the worst luck ever when i go that place. The first night there, my eye swelled up and I couldn't see anything! It watered for about 4 hours. I was miserable. But thank goodness for Amy, cuz she took good care of me :) ...Here is the second most unluckiest thing that happend. (a little background to the story first: during the games when there was a foul ball, I would look at Amy and tell her that it was going to hit my car and break my window. she assured me everytime that it wasn't going to happen. i believed her haha.) So the second night, I got up during the game to go to my car to get some gum or something (don't remember what for, but thats besides the point). So i get to my car, and there's glass just chillin on my trunk...what the heck!?!...I look at my window, and its shattered!!! Not only is my windo shatterd, but there is a dent in my hood. Lucky me, right?...So i call Amy, and she completely thinks I'm kidding. But she comes out and realizes that I was not kidding at all. We drive to Wal-mart, and buy blue painters tape to tape the window to keep it from moving around. My car looked like white trash. It was aaaawwwwfuuuulll! So the next day we drive back to the LBK, with the window like it is...We pulled over at least 5 times to fix the tape because it kept flying off. Oh, and we couldn't drive past about 55 or else the window would shake and more glass would fall in my car...awesome, i know...but its in the shop now, so i am carless once again! My mom and dad are definately taking advantage of me being home though. I did yard work all day today, tomorrow I am painting the fireplace and doing more yard work! WooHoo! Good way to start off my summer haha. On a positive note, I am getting a nice ole tan from being outside so much :)

My Month of January

To start things off: Yes, I realize that I haven't posted in like a month, I apologize. This has been the busiest month I think I have ever had in my life!...So this is about how my month of January went. The first week, I went on a ski trip to Crested Butte with my awesome youth group from South Plains Church of Christ. It was a really great trip. Very very cold though. I think one morning it was about -15!!! Anyways, we had 3 full days of skiing/boarding! The first days was prolly the coldest. It was like a blizzard on the slopes. And smart me forgot to bring a face mask, so my mouth was numb that whole day. I couldn't move my mouth very well at all so when I tried talking I sounded a bit awkward haha. After our long days of skiing/boarding, we got to ride into town on the FREE shuttle bus. We went to a coffee shop, a wonderful pizza place called "The Secret Stash", and another place that we thought was going to be a reggae concert but turned out to be something totally different. We walked to the place where the "reggae concert" was supposed to be, and it turns out that you have to be 21 in order to go to it. So we walked in and walked right back out. It was downstairs and really creepy. There were red curtains and flashy lights. Everyone was either high or drunk. It was very awkward haha....So usually when we got back from town we went hot tubbing by the condos we were staying in. Usually when you go to the mountains you don't think about bringing flip flops. Well the hot tub was up the stairs from our rooms, and the ground was snow packed. Most everyone ran barefoot to the hot tub, because who wants to put boots on to go hot tubbing???...It was pretty funny to watch. Especially when someone would slip and biff it hahaha. The trip back home was about 12 hours. It was long, but worth it....After the long ski trip, I was home for about two days, then I unpacked and repacked my bags to move into the dorms for PLEDGE WEEK!! That was most definately the longest week of my life! It felt like a month! I'm not really suppose to talk about it but I did learn one thing...how to eat in unison with 21 other girls haha. So I am now an official Kappa Phi Kappa member!! We are prolly the loudest pledge class they've ever had haha. The day after pledge week was over, master follies practice started. We practice almost every night, from about 9-12. Although it makes my days go by much longer, it definately brings us closer as sisters in Christ :)...I kinda just wanted to get my blog caught up on this month cause I was way behind. There's not much detail in this post at all cause it would take waaayyyy to long haha, but I'll try to be better at keepin this thing updated in the future :)

Who Am I?

I have heard this song many times, but I'm one of those people who gets caught up in the music and doesn't really pay attention to the words. I found this video, and it had the words with it which made it ALL the better! It's a very meaningful song, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Choir Tour

So I recently got back from tour with my choir. We went to Arizona, New Mexico, and other parts in Texas. We were gone for 8 days and had 10 concerts I think. The majority of our time was spent riding on the bus. I think our longest trip on the bus in one day was about 9 hours! I left on tour the day after my car wreck, so it was pretty uncomfortable to be sitting on the bus for such long hours at a time haha. One of the best things about tour was the food! We had delicious homemade food for dinner everynight. One of the churches we ate at had a desert table, no kidding, like a mile long! It was about as long as the food table. It looked like the gates opened up from heaven and left us with so much food we didn't know what to do with haha. I felt like i had gained 500 pounds! We didn't have much, but in our free time we went to a couple of malls. The mall in Pheonix was outside! It was so pretty. Couches, umbrellas, fire thingys, and waterfalls were all around the mall area. I think I spent about 3 hours on one of the couches just enjoying the weather! I did do quite a bit of shopping too. However I couldn't buy much cuz of the limited amount of space we had on the bus....okay funny story...we were waiting at the bus stop for our bus to pick us back up and a few of us started singing one of our concert songs, out in the middle of the parking lot. There were also other random people waiting for a bus too. And this song we sang was not in English! So these people looked at us, like what on earth are they doing!?! haha it was hilarious....We have a pretty talented choir, not gonna lie. That trip was prolly the longest thing I've ever been on, and prolly one of the most tiring, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to go. I'm guessing we sang to over 1,000 people the whole time we were gone. Most all of our songs have a pretty powerful message if you pay attention to the words. One of our songs is called "We Are Not Alone". The title of the song pretty much makes up the entire song. Those words are repeated over and over again. "We are not alone, God is with us". God has promised to be with us forever and ever. He will never leave us, we are not alone... There are many ways to bring people to Christ using different talents. Our talent is singing; and with that talent, we spread a powerful message to hundreds of people. Maybe you can't travel to different states, or maybe you don't sing, but everybody has the opportunity to shine using a talent they have in order to spread the "Good News" (which was another one of our songs haha). So I leave you with this....What is your talent, and how can you use it to spread God's word?

My Car Got Sandwiched

Okay so the last time I posted a blog was the 11th. That same day, just a little later in the day, I was in a car wreck. Yes, I know, wreck number 3. The first one doesn't really count though, cuz it was my babysitter that was driving and I got a concusion so I don't remember a thing! Wreck number 2 wasn't my fault. It was in Colorado. I was going about 60 and a deer jumped out of the trees in front of me. It totaled that car. Then wreck number 3 happened. This one wasn't my fault either. I was completely stopped at a stop sign and the person 2 cars behind me wasn't paying any attention. She just kept on driving and hit the car in front of her, which hit my car, then my car hit the car in front of me. A 4 car wreck, yes....I got sandwiched. So now my car is in the shop. It's been in there for about 2 weeks and I think they're going to total it :( It's pretty crushed up I guess. Nobody got hurt, which is a good thing! All of those little angels up in heaven were watching over us that day :)

Meals on Wheels

So I haven't been very good about posting lately : / that's something I need to work on. This week I had finals for all my classes. It was sorta stressful but I am glad it's over with! On Thursday, I had the opportunity to do "Meals on Wheels" with my 2nd mom, Rhonda Pool. This is an organization where people, everday deliver meals to the elderly, who live at home and don't have very much. It was such an eye opener to me. I had no idea that there were people living like that. Let me get something straight...these meals that we delivered did not look very appetizing, at all!...Ok, so this one lady we delivered to lived by herself. We were walking on the sidewalk up to her house and before we even got there, she had already started to open her door. It was if she were anxiously waiting on her food for the day. Or maybe she was excited to see people that were coming to talk to her. Anyways, we set her food down on the table for her and as we were leaving she started to talk to us. She said something like this, "Thank you so much, it's not everday that i get to talk to someone. I am really glad ya'll came." To me, it sounded as if she were about to cry. Rhonda asked her if she'd like a hug and the old lady said "yes, I think that's what I need right now." It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. It was hard for me to comprehend that she actually lived like that...everyday; by herself in a small and not so clean house. Doing that service project made me realize how much I take for granted. I have a car, a computer, a phone, plenty of clothes and shoes, and edible food, yet I still feel like I don't have enough. No matter how much we have, we always want more. I don't know why we keep wanting and wanting all of these material things. When we die, our things aren't going with us. In I Timothy 6:7 it says...For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing we will be content with that. With only a few minutes of looking at these peoples houses, and seeing how they live their lives, they don't have much more than the clothes they have on and the food that "Meals on Wheels" brings them. Even though the food looked absolutely disgusting, they were still so thankful to recieve it. One more verse i wanted to share comes from Matthew 6:19...Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Thanksgiving Break

Break was really nice. I had almost a week off from school so I'm not complaining. Our family went to Bandera, TX to visit our grandparents. It's literally out in the middle of nowhere! I didn't have cell service or internet connection! Well...when i went into town i had service but that didn't happen very often. Me and sister rode the golf cart most of the time. It was pretty entertaining. We rode around in the hills when it was dark haha, it was sCaRyyyy! Sister thought something grabbed her foot and we both screamed. The worst part about it was that the golf cart was about out of battery so it wouldn't go very fast so that just added to the excitement!!! So while we were out riding around our parents and grandparents were at some peoples house visiting. Me and sister got hungry so we went inside to find something to eat. Well, i found this can of sweetend condensed milk, and if you've ever had it before, you know that it is pretty tastey. So we had this bright idea of eating it with potato chips...sweet and salty...it was gonna work. We ate about half of the can until we realized that it had expired in 2002...yes, 7 years ago haha. We wondered why it had a funny color, but it still tasted good haha. (this is totally off subject but i'm watching the Tech vs. Baylor game, and Tech is makin a comeback!!! woooo!!!) Anyways, when we went to Kerrville, we got to go to the James Avery Headquarters!! It was really cool! Me and sister both got to pick out new purity rings but we don't get them till Christmas, poo. Ummm...so we drove back home today and when we got back we all felt like we gained 100 pounds during Thanksgiving, so we all went to Body Works for about 2 hours haha. School starts back on Monday, blehhh :( Choir has chapel on Tuesday and I'm kinda nervous cuz we're singing a new song and its in a different language!!! and we've only sang it a few times in rehersal...YIKES! We have a concert on the 3rd and our final song is going to be with the band, so that should be interesting. K, well there's somewhat of an update on what's going on here in my life. I'm getting off now so I can finish watching the game!!!

Teeth Pulling Time!! AHH

Soooo....today i got my wisdom teeth pulled. All 4 of them. I'm glad it's finally over, cuz i've been putting it off for about 2 years now. Yes 2 years! It wasn't actually that bad. The worst part about it was prolly the shot they gave me to put me to sleep. I remember the doctor saying..."now is there any questions you have for me before i begin"...i asked him "what are you doing"...he said he was just going to stick a little iv in me. After i felt the prick of the needle, I don't remember anything that happened after that. I woke up when it was all over with, and when i tried standing up, I almost fell over haha. My legs were weak, and I have no idea why. It was weird. But anyways, I wasn't allowed to eat or drink at all before, and after they pulled them I slept the rest of the day. When I finally took a sip of something for the first time, it ran out of my mouth! My mouth was still numb haha, i couldn't feel a thing! I literally didn't eat for about 30 hours. I was starving! After I drank a little soup it was like heaven on my tongue haha. I sat there and thought about the kids who don't get to eat for days. For me, one day without eating felt like an eternity! It made me realize how fortunate I am to have food to eat when I want to eat, clothes on my body to keep me warm, and a roof over my head. God has blessed me and my family so much and I thank him for that everday! :)

I'm new at this!!!

Ok, I've never done this before, but my wonderful friend Baron Batch told me that I needed to get one...haha thanks Baron. I doubt I'll ever learn how to use it. I'm not so sure how well its going to work out but I guess we'll see!
